A commitment to joy

Linden House celebrates the joy of a certain kind of comedy – the comedy of wit, language and ideas. “We like intelligent comedy,” says founder, Janet Uren. Established in 2007 by a community actor who wanted to see more comic classics on Ottawa stages, Linden House chooses plays by the best writers of British comedy – most of them working in the 20th century – including playwrights such as Coward, Maugham and Shaw. These plays are typically both merry and thoughtful. As Coward said, in responding to a criticism that his plays were “trivial”: “What, I ask you, is trivial about merriment?”
